Tiling a wall requires knowing exactly how many tiles to buy — too few means a second trip to the store (and potentially a different dye lot), too many means wasted money. This calculator estimates the number of tiles and boxes you need based on wall area, tile dimensions, and a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.

Wall area: 10 m² | Tile: 30×30 cm | Waste: 10% | 11 tiles/box

Tiles needed = ceil(10 ÷ 0.09 × 1.10) = 123 tiles
Boxes = ceil(123 ÷ 11) = 12 boxes

Pro Tip: Order an extra box beyond your calculation. If tiles from different production batches have slight color variations, you'll have enough matching tiles to complete the job.

How do I measure the wall area for tiling?

Multiply the wall height by width for each wall, add them together, then subtract the area of large openings (doors, windows). For simple rectangular walls this is straightforward — a 2.5m × 3m wall is 7.5 m². For irregular walls, break them into rectangles and add the areas.

How much extra should I allow for waste and cuts?

Add 10% for standard rectangular layouts. Add 15% for diagonal (diamond) patterns or herringbone layouts which produce more offcuts. Add 20% if you're tiling around many obstacles (pipes, alcoves, windows) or if the walls are significantly out of plumb.

Do larger tiles mean less waste?

Not necessarily — in fact, larger tiles (60×60 cm) can produce more waste in small rooms because each offcut is large. The ideal tile size balances the room dimensions: tiles that fit evenly into the wall width and height produce minimal waste. Use 30×30 cm as a starting point for most residential bathrooms.

Tile dimensions vary by manufacturer and product line. Always verify the actual tile size before ordering. The waste percentage is an estimate — complex layouts, large-format tiles, and out-of-square walls can increase offcut waste. Keep a few spare tiles after the project for future repairs.
