Making custom curtains is one of the most rewarding DIY projects — but ordering the wrong amount of fabric is a costly mistake. Fabric priced at $30–80 per meter adds up fast. This calculator determines how many meters you need based on your window size, how gathered you want the curtains, and the width of the fabric roll.
Enter your window width and height (or the finished curtain dimensions if you've already decided). Choose a fullness ratio — 2× is the classic standard. Set your fabric width (137 cm is the most common) and add hem allowance. The result tells you the total fabric meters and how many vertical panels to cut.
Fullness is the ratio of fabric width to window width. 1.5× gives a light gather (budget), 2× is the standard for a classic pleated look, and 2.5–3× creates a luxurious, deeply gathered appearance. Eyelet and pencil pleat heading styles both work well at 2× fullness; pinch pleats typically need 2.5×.
Standard upholstery fabric is 137 cm (54 inches) wide. Double-width fabrics (274 cm / 108 in) and sheers (up to 300 cm / 118 in) are also available. The calculator divides your total width by the fabric width to determine how many vertical panels you need. Wider fabric means fewer panels and less waste.
Add 20–30 cm total for hems (10–15 cm top and bottom). For floor-length curtains, add an extra 5 cm for a 'puddled' look. If using a pole, measure from the eyelet center to the desired drop length. For tracks, measure from the top of the track. Always measure AFTER the rod or track is installed.
