Wallpaper gives a room character that paint cannot match, but it's expensive and buying the wrong number of rolls is costly — either you run out mid-project or you're stuck with expensive unused rolls. This calculator estimates how many rolls you need from your wall area, roll size, and whether your chosen wallpaper has a pattern that requires alignment.
Enter your total wall area (height × width for each wall, summed). The default roll size is the European standard (10.05 m × 0.53 m) — adjust if your wallpaper uses different dimensions. If your wallpaper has a printed pattern, use the Pattern Repeat slider to account for the extra length each strip needs for pattern matching.
Standard European wallpaper rolls are 10.05 m long × 0.53 m wide (about 5.3 m² per roll). American rolls are typically 27 ft × 27 in (about 5.6 m²). Always check your actual roll dimensions — designer and imported wallpapers may use different sizes.
The pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the pattern design repeats itself, printed on the roll label (e.g., 'Repeat: 32 cm'). When hanging, you need to shift each strip to align the pattern, which wastes extra length. The calculator's Pattern Repeat slider accounts for this — set it higher for large patterns (20–30%) and lower for small repeats or plain wallpaper (0%).
It's better to over-order by one roll. Wallpaper is produced in dye lots, and rolls from different production runs may have visible color differences. Most retailers accept returns of unopened rolls. Having one extra roll also covers future repairs.
