Flooring Calculator

Free flooring calculator: calculate how many boxes of laminate, hardwood, or vinyl flooring you need. Enter room area, plank size, and boxes per pack. Includes waste factor for cuts.

Laying a new floor transforms a room, but running out of planks mid-installation — or buying far too many — are common and expensive mistakes. This calculator estimates the number of boxes you should buy based on your room's area, the plank dimensions, and a waste allowance for offcuts and staggered joints.

Enter the floor area of your room, your chosen plank size (check the box), and how many planks come per box. The waste slider starts at 5% for standard parallel layouts — increase it for complex room shapes or diagonal patterns. The result gives you both the box count and the total number of planks.

Example
Example: Flooring a Living Room

Room: 20 m² | Planks: 120×20 cm | 8 planks/box | Waste: 5%

Box area = 1.2 × 0.2 × 8 = 1.92 m²
Boxes = ceil(20 ÷ 1.92 × 1.05) = 11 boxes (88 planks)

Pro Tip: Run planks parallel to the longest wall for the most natural look and least waste. For herringbone or diagonal patterns, increase the waste factor to 15%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square meters are in a box of flooring?

Laminate and engineered wood flooring typically comes in boxes covering 1.5–2.5 m². A standard box of 8 planks at 120×20 cm covers 1.92 m². Always check the box label — coverage varies significantly between manufacturers and product lines.

How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?

Add a minimum of 5% for waste. This covers offcuts, staggered end-joints, and occasional damaged planks. For rooms with many angles, alcoves, or pipes, increase to 10%. For herringbone or chevron patterns, use 15%. Always buy at least one extra box beyond the calculated amount.

Should I let flooring planks acclimate before installation?

Yes — most laminate and engineered wood flooring needs 24–48 hours to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity. Check the manufacturer's instructions: unopened boxes should be laid flat in the room where they'll be installed. Skipping acclimation can lead to gaps or buckling after installation.

Flooring coverage per box varies by manufacturer, plank thickness, and product type. Always verify the actual coverage stated on the box. Acclimate flooring in the installation room for 24–48 hours before laying. Keep a few spare planks for future repairs — discontinued product lines may be impossible to match later.
