A paver patio is really three materials in one project: the pavers themselves, the compacted gravel base, and the sand bedding layer that the pavers sit in. Missing any one means an extra trip to the yard. This calculator estimates all three from your patio size and paver dimensions.
Enter the patio length and width, paver size, joint width and waste. The result gives the paver count, base gravel volume, bedding sand volume and sand bags, plus a cost estimate that includes both pavers and sand.
For patios and walkways, a compacted base of 10-15 cm (4-6 in) of crushed stone or gravel is standard (ICPI guidance). The calculator uses 10 cm for the base volume estimate - add more for driveways or heavy vehicle traffic.
Yes. After the pavers are set, joint sand is swept into the gaps and compacted to lock the pavers together. Joint sand volume is small relative to the base - order about 1 kg per m² for a typical 3 mm joint, more for wider joints.
About 10% is standard for rectangular layouts. Circular patterns, herringbone or curved borders cut more pavers and need 15-20%. The calculator uses your chosen waste percentage for the paver count.
