Garden Mulch Calculator

Free mulch calculator estimates garden bed mulch volume, bags and cost, and compares bagged vs bulk prices. Enter bed size and depth for bark or wood chips.

Mulch is a layer of bark, wood chips or shredded wood spread over the soil surface of garden beds and around trees - it keeps moisture in, suppresses weeds and moderates soil temperature. Mulch is sold two ways: in bags at the garden center or in bulk by the cubic meter from a landscape supplier, and the cheaper option depends on how much you need.

This calculator turns your bed size and target depth into the volume, bag count and both cost options so you can compare before buying. Enter the bed length, width and depth, pick a bag size and enter prices.

Example
Example: 5 x 3 m Garden Bed, 5 cm Deep

Length: 5 m | Width: 3 m | Depth: 5 cm | Bags: 2 cu ft | Bag: $4 | Bulk: $30/m³

Volume = 5 x 3 x 0.05 = 0.75 m³
Bags = ceil(0.75 / 0.057) = 14 bags
Bagged cost = 14 x 4 = $56
Bulk cost = 0.75 x 30 = $22.5
Difference = 22.5 - 56 = -$33.5 (bulk saves $33.5)

Key Insight: Bulk mulch is usually far cheaper for anything larger than a small bed - but only if you can haul it. Compare delivery fees and the minimum order before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should mulch be?

A 5-8 cm (2-3 in) layer is ideal for most beds: deep enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture, shallow enough to let water reach the soil. Go to 10 cm (4 in) only for heavy weed suppression, and avoid piling mulch against plant stems.

Bags or bulk - which should I buy?

Bags are easier to carry and are sold in fixed sizes (commonly 2 cu ft), but bulk delivery is usually cheaper per cubic yard for larger projects. One cubic yard equals 27 cu ft, or about 13.5 standard 2 cu ft bags.

How do I convert between cubic yards and cubic meters?

1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = 0.7646 m³. The calculator works in cubic meters and bags, and the conversion above is handy when your supplier quotes in cubic yards.

A 2 cu ft bag holds about 0.057 m³, a 1.5 cu ft bag 0.042 m³ and a 3 cu ft bag 0.085 m³; 1 cubic yard = 0.7646 m³. Bulk prices vary by material and delivery distance - include delivery in the bulk price for a fair comparison. A 5-8 cm layer is typical for garden beds; deeper layers suppress weeds better but cost more.
