This calculator turns your deck dimensions into concrete numbers: decking boards, joists, fasteners, concrete footings and a cost estimate.

Length: 5 m | Width: 4 m | Board: 14.5 x 300 cm | Joists: 40 cm | Waste: 10%

Area = 5 x 4 = 20 m²
Boards = ceil(20 / (0.145 x 3) x 1.10) = 51 boards
Joists = ceil(5 / 0.4) + 1 = 14 joists
Fasteners = 51 x 4 = 204 screws
Footings = (ceil(5 / 2.4) + 1) x (ceil(4 / 1.8) + 1) = 16 footings
Concrete bags = 16 x 1 = 16 bags

Key Insight: Add 10% waste for cuts around corners and posts - boards are rarely sold per piece at small sizes, so round up to full boards. The footing grid is a planning estimate; verify spans and frost depth with local codes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What joist spacing should I use?

40 cm (16 in) on center is the most common spacing for residential decks and is the default reference in the IRC. Closer 30 cm spacing supports thicker loads or diagonal patterns, while 60 cm is used for lightweight composite boards on some systems - check the deck board manufacturer's requirements.

How much gap should deck boards have?

Most deck boards are installed with a 3-6 mm gap so water drains and boards can expand. The calculator treats the board width as the full installed width including the gap - enter the board width plus your intended gap.

How many fasteners do I need per board?

A common rule is 2 screws at each joist, which gives about 4 fasteners per board for a typical 3 m board over 40 cm joists. Composite and hidden fastening systems use different counts - follow the product instructions.

Joist spacing and fastening follow common residential practice (IRC reference 40 cm / 16 in on center).
