Dog Age Calculator

Free dog age calculator converts dog years to human years using the DNA methylation formula and size-based AVMA estimates, with puppy-to-senior life stages.

The old rule of multiplying dog years by 7 is inaccurate, because dogs age much faster in their first years and then slow down. A more scientific approach uses DNA methylation, the biological clock shared by dogs and humans.

This calculator shows two estimates. The primary result uses the DNA methylation formula published in 2020, which maps a 1-year-old dog to about 31 human years. The traditional estimate follows the AVMA rule (15 / 9 / +4-5 per year), adjusted for size.

Choose your dog age and size to also see its life stage, from puppy to senior, based on the 2019 AAHA guidelines with size-specific lifespan estimates.

Enter the age and size - both estimates and the life stage update instantly.

4 years
020
Size only affects the traditional AVMA estimate and the life stage; the DNA-based main result is the same for every size.
Example
Example: 4-year-old medium-size dog

DNA methylation formula:
Human age = 16 x ln(4) + 31 = 53.2 years

Traditional AVMA estimate:
24 + 5 x 2 = 34 human years

The two methods differ because the DNA clock suggests dogs reach adulthood faster than the traditional rule. Life stage for a medium dog at 4 years: mature adult.

Key Insight: use the same method over time to track your dog aging. Size matters mainly for the traditional estimate and life stage, not for the DNA formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the DNA formula?

The Wang 2020 formula was derived from DNA methylation in Labrador retrievers and humans and is the best current science-based estimate. It is most reliable for adult dogs; breed, size and health cause individual variation.

Why is a 1-year-old dog about 31 human years?

DNA methylation shows that dogs reach sexual and social maturity much faster than the old 7-year rule suggested. The formula maps 1 dog year to about 31 human years, then the pace slows.

Does size affect dog aging?

Yes, mainly in lifespan and life stage: small breeds often live into their mid-teens, while giant breeds rarely pass 10-12 years. The traditional AVMA estimate also uses a slower rate (about +4) for small breeds.

What is my dog life stage?

The calculator uses the 2019 AAHA definitions: puppy (up to about 6-9 months, longer for large breeds), young adult (up to about 3-4 years), mature adult, and senior (last 25% of estimated lifespan).

Is the 7-year rule wrong?

Yes. It is a rough rule of thumb that overestimates aging for young dogs and underestimates it for seniors. The DNA formula and the AVMA table are both better references.

When should my dog see the vet?

Puppies need frequent visits for vaccinations; adults should have annual exams; seniors are recommended to visit every six months. Use the life stage shown by the calculator to guide the schedule and follow your vet advice.

This calculator provides estimates for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. The DNA formula was derived from Labrador retrievers and applies best to adult dogs; the traditional estimate is a rough guide. Life stages follow the 2019 AAHA guidelines with approximate lifespan assumptions. For health decisions, consult your veterinarian.
