Building a brick wall — whether a garden boundary, a house extension, or a fireplace — starts with knowing how many bricks to order. Most brick suppliers deliver by the pallet (usually 500 bricks), so getting the count wrong means either a second delivery charge or a pile of unused bricks in your garden. This calculator gives you a reliable brick count based on wall area and brick face dimensions.
Enter the total face area of your wall (length × height) and the nominal dimensions of your chosen brick including the mortar joint. The waste allowance covers cuts at corners and around openings. The result gives you the brick count plus an estimated mortar volume. Remember that this is for single-skin walls — cavity walls or double-brick construction need twice the calculated quantity.
Standard modular bricks with mortar joints measure approximately 200 × 100 × 100 mm (L × H × W). Without mortar they are about 190 × 90 × 90 mm. The calculator uses the dimensions WITH mortar joints included, so enter the brick's nominal size as specified by the manufacturer — typically 200 × 100 mm for the face area.
One cubic meter of mortar uses approximately 8–10 bags of cement (50 kg each) and 0.8 m³ of sand. The calculator provides the total mortar volume — multiply by your preferred mix ratio to get individual material quantities. A standard bricklaying mortar mix is 1 part cement to 4–5 parts sand.
For a single-skin (half-brick) wall, each square meter takes about 50–55 bricks. For a double-skin (full-brick or cavity) wall, double the number — about 100–110 bricks per m². The calculator works with face area, so select 'double skin' by halving your wall area input, or simply double the calculated result.
